Private Acropolis Half-Day Tour from Piraeus with a Licensed Guide

This private four-hour tour puts the Acropolis at the centre of a short port day. You are met at the Piraeus cruise pier and driven into central Athens, where a licensed English-speaking guide walks you through the site for about two hours — the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion with its caryatids, and the Parthenon, plus the Theatre of Dionysus and the Herodes Atticus Theatre if time allows. Entrance tickets are arranged in advance, so there is no ticket queue. You are then driven back to the pier, timed to your ship's departure.

The Acropolis is the one thing most cruise passengers want from a day in Athens, and on a short call there is rarely time for much else. This tour is built around it.

On the site

Your licensed guide meets you at the entrance and takes about two hours to walk the rock: up through the Propylaea, the monumental gateway; past the small Temple of Athena Nike; to the Erechtheion with its Porch of the Caryatids; and to the Parthenon itself. If the schedule allows, the Theatre of Dionysus and the Herodes Atticus Theatre on the south slope are included too.

A licensed guide is not a nicety here — inside Greek archaeological sites, guided commentary is legally reserved for state-licensed guides.

Tickets

Acropolis entrance tickets are arranged in advance and included in the price. In peak season the ticket queue alone can cost a substantial part of a port day, so this is the practical difference between seeing the site calmly and rushing it.

Accessibility — read this before booking

This tour is not well suited to guests with limited mobility. The route to the Parthenon is up stairs, roughly half of them marble worn smooth by two and a half thousand years of feet, and slippery in the wet.

There is a lift on the site, but it requires a doctor’s report and has to be arranged in advance, and even then there can be a queue for it. If mobility is a concern, tell us when you enquire and we will say honestly whether this tour will work for you — our panoramic Athens tour covers the city with almost no walking.

Timing

Four hours pier to pier, planned backwards from your ship’s departure with a buffer. The part that flexes if traffic runs long is the south slope, not the Parthenon.
