Santorini Cable Car vs Tender: Lines and Timing for Cruise Passengers

Santorini is a tender port: your ship anchors in the caldera and tenders you to the Old Port below Fira. From there you reach the town by cable car (about 6 minutes, €6 one way), on foot up 588 steps, or by donkey. The cable car is the sensible choice, but it carries only a few people per car and queues build badly in the afternoon — the return down to the tender is the real risk. This guide explains the timing and how to avoid missing your ship.

The short answer

To get from your ship to Fira town you tender to the Old Port, then take the cable car up. To get back you reverse it — and the cable-car queue down in the afternoon is the part that catches cruise passengers out.

Way up from the Old PortTimeCostNotes
Cable car~6 min ride€6 one wayBest option; queues at peak, especially going down
Walk (588 steps)20–30 minFreeSteep, shared with donkeys, hot at midday
Donkey20–30 min~€6Not recommended (animal-welfare and comfort)

Why the return is the risk, not the arrival

Everyone climbs up in the morning at a relaxed pace, so the uphill queue is manageable. The problem is the afternoon: thousands of passengers try to descend within the same couple of hours before all-aboard, and the cable car moves only a few dozen people at a time. Queues of 45–90 minutes are common at peak.

How to protect your ship time

  • Build a buffer of at least an hour for the cable-car queue down.
  • Come down earlier than you think you need to, then relax at the Old Port.
  • On a private tour, your guide watches the queue and your ship’s last tender and gets you into the line in time.

The safe way on a cruise day

Because the timing is unforgiving, a private Santorini tour is the low-stress choice: the whole day, including the descent and the last tender, is timed to your ship. If your ship cannot anchor and tender at all, you receive a full refund.
