Katakolon to Ancient Olympia: Distance, Time and Options

Ancient Olympia is about 35 km inland from the Katakolon cruise pier, a 40-minute drive each way. Your realistic options on a port day are a private tour or taxi (door to door, timed to the ship), the seasonal local train, or the tourist "train" on the pier. A private tour is the safest choice because your return is timed to your ship's departure. This guide compares them on time, cost and how much they put your ship time at risk.

The short answer

Olympia is 35 km from Katakolon — about 40 minutes by road. On a cruise day you have four sensible ways to get there:

OptionTime each wayCostBest for
Private tour~40 minfrom €280 / groupGuaranteed return, guided, no logistics
Taxi~40 minagree fare on the pierIndependent travellers; confirm a return time
Local train~35–45 mina few € ppBudget travellers, when the schedule fits the call
Tourist “train” on pierKatakolon only~€10A village loop, not a way to reach Olympia

Private tour or taxi

Both take about 40 minutes on the same road. The difference is the return: a private tour is timed to your ship’s departure and your vessel is tracked, while a taxi leaves the timing — and finding a ride back — to you. If you take a taxi, agree the fare and a firm pickup time in Olympia before you set off.

The local train

There is a rail line from Katakolon to Olympia, but service is limited and seasonal, and the timetable does not always line up with a cruise call. Only rely on it if you have checked the day’s schedule and it leaves you a real buffer before all-aboard.

The tourist train on the pier

The little “train” parked by the ship is a loop of Katakolon village and the nearby coast — it does not go to Olympia. It’s a pleasant half-hour if you’re staying in town, nothing more.

The safe way on a cruise day

Because Olympia is inland, the return drive is where ship time is won or lost. A private Ancient Olympia tour is timed to your ship, and you receive a full refund if your ship cannot dock.
